The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a big dog on short legs: intelligent, alert and eager to be involved in family life. Bred to drive cattle, it is watchful and will bark to announce visitors, but it is affectionate and adaptable at home, generally getting along well with children and other pets. Cardigans tend to be a little more reserved with strangers than their Pembroke cousins, bonding closely with their own people. These are active herders that need daily walks, play and mental challenges to stay happy; boredom leads to barking and mischief. They excel at herding, agility and trick training and love having a job. Positive, food-motivated training works wonderfully — just watch the waistline, as corgis gain weight easily and extra pounds strain their long backs. The medium double coat sheds year-round and heavily in season, needing weekly brushing. The long spine makes them prone to intervertebral disc disease, so discourage jumping and stair-leaping, and keep them lean. Watch also for hip dysplasia and eye issues. With exercise and a healthy weight, the Cardigan is a sturdy, long-lived companion.
