The Dutch Shepherd is an intelligent, energetic working breed closely related to the Belgian and German shepherds, but generally healthier and more even-tempered. It is intensely loyal, forms a deep bond with its handler and is naturally alert and protective without unnecessary aggression. Lively and affectionate with its family, it makes an excellent companion for an active, engaged owner who can meet its needs. This is a high-drive dog that requires serious daily exercise and mental work — running, training, herding, agility, obedience or protection sports all suit it. Dutchies are famously trainable, quick to learn and eager to please, thriving on structured tasks and positive reinforcement. Left bored or under-exercised, they will invent their own outlets, so consistency and engagement are key from puppyhood. Coat care depends on variety: the common short-haired type needs only weekly brushing, while long-haired and wire-haired coats need a little more. The breed is remarkably robust, with hip and elbow dysplasia and allergies among the few concerns. Given a job and a bond, the Dutch Shepherd is a devoted, capable partner.
