The Miniature Schnauzer is a bearded, spirited little farm terrier: smart, alert, spunky and endlessly devoted, with a strong watchdog instinct that means it will announce every visitor and sound. Bright and quick to learn, it takes well to training but needs it, along with early socialisation, to keep its terrier boldness and barking in check. Sturdier and more robust than many small dogs, it enjoys daily walks, play and games, and it fits happily into family or apartment life as long as its mind is kept busy. The wiry double coat does not shed much, which many allergy sufferers appreciate, but it needs regular brushing and clipping or hand-stripping every few weeks, plus beard cleaning. Health-wise the breed is prone to a few specific issues: it can develop high blood fats (hyperlipidaemia) that raise the risk of pancreatitis, so a low-fat diet and lean weight matter, and it is prone to bladder and kidney stones, so plenty of water and prompt attention to urinary signs help. Also watch for cataracts and other eye disease, and keep up dental care. Give a Mini Schnauzer training, exercise and a sensible diet, and it will be a lively, loyal companion for twelve to fifteen years.
