The Norwich Terrier is a small but robust working terrier with a famously cheerful, affectionate and sociable disposition. Unlike some terriers, it is notably people-oriented and gets along well with other dogs and family members, making it an adaptable companion for many homes. Still, it is a true terrier at heart — curious, brave and alert, with a love of digging and chasing that reflects its ratting origins. This is an energetic little dog that needs daily walks, play and mental stimulation to stay happy, though its small size means those needs are manageable even in an apartment. Norwich Terriers are intelligent and eager but have an independent streak, so keep training upbeat, consistent and reward-based, and socialize early. They enjoy games, earthdog activities and simply accompanying their people everywhere. The hard, wiry coat needs weekly brushing and hand-stripping a couple of times a year to maintain its weatherproof texture, and it sheds little. The breed is generally healthy and long-lived, with patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, an upper airway (breathing) syndrome and dental issues among the concerns. Given exercise, company and affection, the Norwich is a hardy, delightful little companion.
