The Papillon — named for its butterfly-shaped ears — is one of the brightest and most trainable of all small dogs, a tiny toy breed with a big, athletic, outgoing personality. Far from a fragile lapdog, it excels at agility and obedience, routinely outperforming much larger breeds, and it needs that mental and physical outlet: daily walks, play, tricks and training keep it happy, while boredom makes it yappy and restless. Friendly, curious and devoted, it fits apartment or family life well as long as its clever mind is kept busy. The long, silky single coat is surprisingly easy, needing only a few brushings a week and no trimming. Being tiny, the Papillon is delicate and needs protection from rough play and falls. Health-wise it is generally a hardy, long-lived breed, but buy from a breeder who screens, and watch for the small-dog issues: patellar luxation, dental disease (essential brushing in that small mouth), progressive retinal atrophy and heart disease with age. Keep up dental care, handle it gently, give it exercise and training, and a Papillon will be a brilliant, joyful companion for fourteen to sixteen years.
