The Pekingese is an ancient Chinese 'lion dog' bred to be the cherished companion of emperors, and it has never forgotten it: dignified, independent, loyal and confident to the point of self-importance, it moves through life with a rolling, majestic gait and accepts devotion as its due. It is affectionate with its own family but naturally reserved with strangers, and its stubborn, regal streak means training rewards patience rather than expecting eager obedience. Its exercise needs are low, making it a good apartment dog, but it is a calm companion, not a playmate for boisterous young children. The long, heavy double coat needs regular brushing to prevent matting, plus careful cleaning of the facial folds. As a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, the Pekingese has real health considerations: it is heat-intolerant and can breathe hard, so keep it cool and never over-exert it, and its prominent eyes are prone to injury and ulcers. It is also prone to intervertebral disc disease from its long back (discourage jumping), and to heart disease with age. Keep it cool, groomed and lean, protect its eyes and back, keep up dental care, and this regal little lion-dog will be a devoted companion for twelve to fourteen years.
