The Rex originated in France in the early twentieth century from a natural fur mutation and quickly became prized for its uniquely soft, upright, velvet-like coat. Standard Rex rabbits weigh about 3.0-4.5 kg (a smaller Mini Rex also exists) and live seven to ten years. They are known for a calm, intelligent, and people-friendly temperament, and does often make attentive mothers. Rabbits should be kept in neutered bonded pairs with generous space and daily exercise. The Rex coat is low-maintenance for grooming, needing only light brushing since over-brushing can damage the delicate short fur, but the sparse foot fur makes them prone to sore hocks, so provide soft, solid flooring rather than wire. Feed the standard rabbit diet of unlimited grass hay, fresh leafy greens, and a measured pellet portion, limiting treats. Provide hay and chews for continuous dental wear, and check the hocks regularly given the breed's thin paw padding.
