The West Highland White Terrier is a bright, confident, cheerful little Scottish terrier full of self-importance and good humour. Bred to hunt rats and foxes, it retains a true terrier character: bold, curious and busy, it loves to dig, chase small animals and bark an alert, so it needs early socialisation, consistent kind training and enough exercise and play to channel that energy. It is sturdier and more independent than many small breeds, friendly and adaptable, and it makes a lively companion for owners who enjoy a real terrier personality rather than a docile lapdog. The harsh white double coat needs regular brushing and either hand-stripping or clipping every few weeks to stay in good condition. Health-wise the Westie is prone above all to skin problems — allergies and chronic itchy skin conditions are common, so a good diet and prompt vet attention to skin issues matter. Also watch for patellar luxation, Legg-Calvé-Perthes hip disease, and, in the breed, a rare jaw-bone condition and a lung disease of older dogs. Keep up grooming, mind the skin, keep it lean and dentally healthy, and a Westie will be a spirited, devoted companion for thirteen to fifteen years.
