The Wire Fox Terrier is a lively, confident and endlessly entertaining terrier with a huge personality packed into a small frame. Bold, curious and affectionate with its family, it is alert and makes a keen watchdog, though it can be scrappy with other dogs and views small animals as prey thanks to its hunting heritage. It thrives on attention and involvement and is happiest as a full member of an active household. This is a high-energy breed that needs plenty of daily exercise and mental challenge — walks, games, fetch and secure off-leash running keep it satisfied, but a fenced yard is wise given its love of digging and chasing. Intelligent and independent, Wires can be stubborn and easily bored, so training should be short, fun, varied and reward-based, with early socialization to temper terrier feistiness. The wiry coat needs regular brushing and hand-stripping several times a year to keep its texture, though pet dogs are often clipped for convenience. The breed is generally healthy and long-lived, with patellar luxation, eye conditions such as cataracts, deafness and epilepsy among the concerns. Well-exercised and engaged, the Wire Fox Terrier is a hardy, hilarious companion.
