The yellow-bellied slider hails from the southeastern United States, from Virginia down to Florida, where it inhabits slow rivers, ponds, and swamps. Adults grow to 20-33 cm, with females noticeably larger than males, and routinely live 30-40 years, matching the longevity of their red-eared relatives. House them like other sliders in a spacious aquatic tank of at least 300 liters for a single adult, with robust filtration to handle their messy feeding habits. Offer a large basking platform under a 32-35°C heat lamp paired with a quality UVB tube for calcium metabolism, and keep water in the mid-20s Celsius. Their diet is omnivorous: feed hatchlings more animal protein such as pellets and insects, then transition adults to a greens-heavy menu of dandelion, kale, and aquatic vegetation to avoid obesity.
