Why does my 8-week-old puppy need a whole series of shots, and can he go outside before they're finished?

By NetForPet Editorial ยท June 3, 2026

The series exists because of his mother, not because one vaccine is weak. He was born with antibodies he got from her, and while those are still in his blood they protect him โ€” and they also block a vaccine from taking hold. Nobody can know the day that maternal protection fades in an individual puppy; in one it is at six weeks, in another at twelve. So we repeat the vaccine across that whole window, until he is old enough that the maternal antibodies are certainly gone. That is why the final dose in the series is the one that matters most, and why skipping it leaves a hole exactly where you believed you were covered.

Which vaccines he needs depends on where you live and what his life will look like โ€” boarding, dog parks, travel, farm land. Some are core almost everywhere, others are risk-based, and rabies requirements are set by law and differ by country. Check your local regulations and let your vet build the schedule.

Now the part owners get wrong. An under-vaccinated puppy should stay off high-traffic dog ground โ€” busy parks, pet shop floors, the patch of grass the whole street uses. But he must not be shut in the house. The window for social development closes early, and behaviour problems from missed socialisation harm and kill more young dogs than infection does. So carry him. Drive him somewhere and let him watch traffic, buggies and umbrellas from your arms. Visit friends with healthy, fully vaccinated adult dogs. Walk him on clean private surfaces. Invite people to your home.

Two concrete things before you leave the clinic: photograph his vaccination card, and book the follow-ups now โ€” the whole schedule hinges on the intervals being kept. And part-way through the series, vomiting, watery or bloody diarrhoea, or a puppy who suddenly goes flat and won't drink is a same-day call to your vet, not a wait-and-see. An unvaccinated puppy can be lost in a day.
