The betta (Betta splendens) hails from the shallow rice paddies, floodplains and slow streams of the Mekong basin in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Males grow to about 6–7 cm including their trailing fins, and with good care live 3–5 years. Centuries of selective breeding in Southeast Asia produced the veiltail, halfmoon and plakat forms kept today. A single betta thrives in a heated, filtered tank of at least 19 litres — the fishbowl myth is cruel. Keep the water at 24–28°C with a pH of 6.0–7.5 and gentle, low flow, since long fins tire in current. Males are strictly solitary and will fight to the death, so never house two together; provide silk or live plants and a floating leaf or cave for resting near the surface. Bettas are carnivores that need protein-rich micro-pellets rotated with frozen bloodworms, daphnia and brine shrimp; a fasting day each week prevents bloating. Their labyrinth organ lets them gulp air, so leave a gap between water and lid. Common ailments are fin rot, ich, and swim-bladder trouble or constipation from overfeeding — all largely prevented by clean, warm water and a varied, measured diet.
