The dwarf gourami (Trichogaster lalius) is a labyrinth fish from the slow, weedy waters of South Asia — the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Indus river systems of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Males reach about 7.5–8 cm and the fish lives 4–6 years. Its pelvic fins are modified into long, touch-sensitive threads it uses to explore. A pair or single male suits a calm, planted tank of 40–55 litres at 24–28°C with a pH of 6.0–7.5. As a labyrinth breather it gulps air at the surface, so still, warm water and a covered top are ideal, along with floating plants to diffuse light. Males can be territorial toward each other, so avoid crowding them. Dwarf gouramis are omnivores that take flake, micro-pellets, frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms, and even hunt tiny surface insects. Generally peaceful, they make gentle centrepieces for quiet community tanks. Their notable health concern is Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus (DGIV), common in mass-bred stock, along with ich and fin rot; buying healthy, well-sourced fish and keeping stress low is the best protection.
