Kissing gouramis are large, robust labyrinth fish best known for the endearing but misunderstood lip-locking behavior, which is actually a display of dominance rather than affection. They can reach ten to twelve inches and need a spacious tank of 75 gallons or more as adults, with warm water around 72-82F and sturdy decor, since they may uproot delicate plants while grazing. Their constantly working lips are lined with fine teeth used to rasp algae and biofilm from every surface, and in the wild they are filter feeders, so they benefit from a diet including vegetable matter, spirulina, algae wafers, and quality pellets alongside occasional protein. Generally peaceful for their size, they can be mildly territorial and are best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Hardy and long-lived, they are a characterful choice for keepers with a large aquarium and an appreciation for their quirky behavior.
