The paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis) is a labyrinth fish from the rice paddies, ditches and slow streams of East Asia — China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Korea. It reaches about 6–7 cm and lives 6–8 years. Introduced to Europe in the 1860s, it was one of the first ornamental tropical fish kept in the West, prized for both beauty and toughness. Paradise fish are remarkably hardy, tolerating cooler water than most tropicals — 16–26°C — with a pH of 6.0–8.0, in a tank of 75 litres or more. As labyrinth breathers they need surface access, and a well-planted tank with hiding spots helps diffuse their aggression. A tight lid is wise, as they can jump. They are omnivores leaning carnivorous, eating flake, pellets, and frozen or live foods, and will hunt small insects and even fry. Beautiful but pugnacious, males are highly territorial toward each other and may bully smaller or long-finned fish, so choose tankmates carefully. Hardy against most illness, their occasional ich or fin rot follows chilling or poor water and is easily prevented.
