The pearl gourami (Trichopodus leerii) is a labyrinth fish from the slow, blackwater lowland swamps and rivers of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo in Southeast Asia. It grows to about 11–12 cm and lives 4–5 years, sometimes longer. Its body is covered in a lacy pattern of pearly white spots, and breeding males develop a vivid orange throat. Pearl gouramis suit a calm, planted tank of 110 litres or more at 24–28°C with a pH of 5.5–7.5. As labyrinth breathers they take air from the surface, so keep the water still and warm with a covered top and floating plants to diffuse light. Their thread-like pelvic fins are used to feel their surroundings and should be protected from fin-nippers. They are omnivores that eat flake, pellets, and frozen or live foods, and even help control small pest insects and hydra. Among the most peaceful gouramis, they make gentle, elegant centrepieces for community tanks with other calm species. Their main risks are ich and fin rot from poor water or stress; a warm, stable, well-planted tank keeps them serene and healthy.
