The Three Spot Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus) comes from South East Asia and reaches about 12 to 15 cm. The blue, opaline, gold, lavender and platinum gouramis on sale are all colour forms of this single species, which is worth knowing when planning a tank. Like all labyrinth fish it breathes atmospheric air through a specialised organ, so it must always have access to the surface. It needs 120 litres or more at 23-28C, pH 6.0 to 8.0, tolerating a wide range, with calm surface flow, floating plants and cover. Feed a quality flake or pellet with frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. The honest note is temperament: it is often sold as a peaceful community fish, and males in particular become territorial with maturity, chasing other gouramis and slower fish and sometimes harassing a female relentlessly. Keep one male, give the tank plenty of plant cover and sight breaks, and avoid combining it with dwarf gouramis or bettas. In a large planted tank with active mid-water fish it is hardy, curious and long-lived.
