Sparkling gouramis, or pygmy gouramis, are enchanting nano fish that reach barely an inch and a half, covered in a constellation of glittering green-blue spots that flash under good lighting. They belong in a calm, densely planted nano tank of 10 gallons or more with soft, warm, gently filtered water around 76-82F and plenty of surface cover from floating plants where they feel most secure. Remarkably, they produce audible croaking sounds using a specialized pectoral mechanism, most often heard during courtship and minor territorial disputes. Their tiny mouths require small foods such as baby brine shrimp, microworms, cyclops, and crushed flake, and live foods bring out both color and breeding behavior. Peaceful but easily intimidated, they should never share a tank with fast or aggressive species, but in a quiet shrimp or nano community they reveal fascinating, interactive personalities.
