The honey gourami (Trichogaster chuna) is a small labyrinth fish from the slow, heavily vegetated waters of the Ganges and Brahmaputra basins in India and Bangladesh. It reaches only about 4–5 cm and lives 4–8 years — smaller, shier and hardier than the similar-looking dwarf gourami. Breeding males turn a rich honey-amber with a dark throat. A pair or small group suits a calm, planted tank of 40–60 litres at 22–28°C with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Like other labyrinth fish they breathe surface air, so provide still, warm water, floating plants and a covered top. They are shy and appreciate plenty of cover to feel secure. Honey gouramis are omnivores that eat flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen or live foods, feeding slowly and deliberately near the surface. Exceptionally peaceful and unfussy, they are ideal for gentle community and nano tanks. Hardier than dwarf gouramis and not prone to their iridovirus, their main risks are ich and fin rot from poor water, prevented by stable, clean conditions.
