The Giant Gourami (Osphronemus goramy) comes from South East Asia and reaches about 45 to 70 cm, making it by far the largest labyrinth fish. It is widely farmed for food across its range and sold in aquarium shops as an appealing 6 cm juvenile, which is where most of the trouble starts. Old adults develop a thickened, almost blunt forehead and can live well over twenty years. A single adult needs a tank or indoor pond of 1000 litres or more at 20-30C, pH 6.5 to 8.0, with heavy filtration and an air space above the water for breathing. Feed a large pellet with a substantial vegetable component, blanched vegetables, fruit and occasional protein, since adults are largely herbivorous. It is remarkably intelligent and interactive, learns to recognise individual people and can be hand fed, which is exactly why owners keep them long past the point where the tank fits. Realistically, this is a fish for a public aquarium, a very large private setup or a heated indoor pond, and choosing it needs to be a twenty-year decision made in advance.
