An ordinary silver-gold barb for most of the year, until a male comes into condition and turns deep wine red with a black head and fins. Few freshwater fish change this completely.

The Black Ruby Barb (Pethia nigrofasciata) is endemic to Sri Lanka and reaches about 5 to 6 cm. Out of condition it is a modest gold fish with three dark bars. A displaying male transforms: the front half of the body flushes deep ruby red and the head and fins darken to near black, a change that appears within minutes and fades just as fast when the display ends. A group of eight or more needs 100 litres or more at 22-27C, pH 6.0 to 7.5 in soft to moderately hard water, with planting, wood and shaded light. Feed flake, micro pellets and frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp, plus vegetable content. It is one of the most peaceful barbs, far gentler than a tiger barb and unlikely to nip when kept in a proper group, which makes it a good community fish with tetras, rasboras and corydoras. Colour is strongest in a dimly lit, planted tank with a dark substrate and several competing males, and washes out completely in a bright bare tank.
