The cherry barb (Puntius titteya) is a small, slender barb endemic to the shaded, slow forest streams of Sri Lanka. It reaches about 5 cm and lives 5–6 years. Breeding males flush a deep, glowing cherry red, giving the fish its name, while females and non-breeding fish are a softer tan. Unlike its boisterous cousins, the cherry barb is peaceful and rather shy, and it does best in a well-planted tank of 75 litres or more kept in a group of six or more. Provide 23–27°C water with a pH of 6.0–7.5, dark substrate, driftwood and dense planting where the fish feel secure and colour up. A calm environment brings out their best. They are easy omnivores that eat flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen or live foods. Gentle and non-nippy, they make excellent community fish alongside tetras, rasboras and other peaceful species. Hardy overall, their main risks are ich and fin rot from poor water or stress, both prevented by a stable, planted tank and regular water changes.
