The Checker Barb (Oliotius oligolepis, long known as Puntius oligolepis) comes from Sumatra and reaches about 4 to 5 cm. Its name comes from the way each large scale is edged in dark pigment, producing a chequered pattern across the flank. Males are the more colourful sex, with red-tinted fins edged in black. A group of eight or more suits a 70 litre tank or larger at 20-26C, pH 6.0 to 7.5 in soft to moderately hard water, with dense planting, driftwood and dim light. Feed flake, micro pellets and frozen daphnia, cyclops and brine shrimp. It is one of the few genuinely peaceful barbs, small enough for a modest tank, unlikely to nip, and comfortable in slightly cooler water than average. It is a good choice for a planted community with rasboras, small tetras, corydoras and shrimp. Males display to each other constantly with raised fins, which is the main reason to keep more than one, and the pattern shows best over a dark substrate.
