The blue-tongued skink is a chunky, ground-dwelling lizard with a calm, almost dog-like temperament — it recognises its keeper, waddles over for food and tolerates handling well, making it one of the most rewarding pet lizards. It needs a long enclosure of at least 120 cm (they are floor-cruisers, not climbers), a UVB tube, a basking spot around 35°C with a cooler end, and a substrate deep enough to burrow into. As an omnivore its diet is varied and easy but easy to overdo: a mix of leafy greens and vegetables, some animal protein and a little fruit, all with a calcium supplement. Because they are enthusiastic eaters, obesity from overfeeding is one of the most common problems, so measured meals and enough space to move matter. Watch for metabolic bone disease if UVB or calcium is lacking, respiratory infection in cold or damp setups, and stuck shed or mites. Provide fresh water, keep the enclosure clean and correctly heated, offer a balanced portion-controlled diet, and a blue-tongued skink will be a personable, recognisably individual companion for fifteen to twenty years.
