The red-eyed crocodile skink comes from the humid rainforests of New Guinea, reaching only 18-25 cm and living about 8-12 years. Rows of keeled, spiky dorsal scales give it a crocodilian, dragon-like profile, and the striking orange eye-rings are its namesake feature. It is a shy, semi-fossorial species that may freeze or even play dead when startled, and males can vocalize. House singly or as a proven pair in a planted 45x45x45 cm bioactive terrarium with a deep, damp substrate, leaf litter, cork hides, and a shallow water area. Keep cooler temperatures of 24-28 C with only low-level UVB and high humidity of 70-90% via daily misting and a moisture-retentive floor. Feed small gut-loaded insects such as crickets, roaches, and worms dusted with calcium. These skinks are best treated as a hands-off, observation species, as handling stresses them.
