The fire skink inhabits the tropical forests and grasslands of West Africa, reaching 25-37 cm and living 15-20 years. Its brilliant red-orange sides, marked with black-and-white barring over a bronze back, make it one of the most colorful skinks. Naturally shy and fossorial, it spends much of its time burrowing and hiding, so a well-planted setup encourages more visible activity. Keep a single skink in a 75-115 liter terrarium with a deep, moisture-retentive substrate for digging, cork bark hides, and leaf litter. Provide a basking spot of 30-33 C, a cooler side, and low-to-moderate UVB. Maintain humidity around 60-70% with a moist substrate layer and occasional misting. Feed a varied insectivore diet of gut-loaded crickets, roaches, and worms dusted with calcium, plus the occasional pinky for adults. With consistent, gentle interaction many fire skinks become tolerant of brief handling.
