Fire skinks are secretive burrowers that need a 60–90 L terrarium with 10–15 cm of moisture-holding substrate such as a soil-coco mix they can tunnel through. Provide a warm basking area of 28–31°C, a cool end near 24°C, a hide or two, leaf litter, and humidity of 60–70% from partial misting. A low-level UVB tube supports their bones and colour. Feed a varied insect diet — crickets, roaches, worms — dusted with calcium and vitamins, every other day for youngsters and roughly three times a week for adults, with the occasional pinky or bit of fruit for enrichment. A shallow water dish should always be available. Newly acquired fire skinks are shy and spend days buried, but with patience and routine feeding they grow bold enough to surface for food and tolerate short, calm handling. Support the body and avoid grabbing the tail, which can drop. Health concerns are metabolic bone disease from poor calcium or UVB, respiratory infection if kept cool and wet, and skin or shedding issues when humidity is neglected.
