Prehensile-tailed skinks are large, arboreal and highly unusual among skinks for being herbivorous and social. House them in a tall, planted enclosure of at least 120 cm high with sturdy branches and leafy cover, a basking gradient of 28–32°C, a cool retreat, UVB lighting, and humidity of 60–80% from regular misting. Feed a plant-based diet of leafy greens, chopped vegetables and safe fruits, plus browse and calcium-dusted greens; they eat no insects. Variety and correct calcium-to-phosphorus balance are important to prevent metabolic bone disease in such a large, slow-growing herbivore. These skinks live in family groups called circuluses and can be kept in bonded pairs or small groups, but introductions must be careful because they defend family members. With gentle, consistent handling they become remarkably trusting; support the body and let the prehensile tail grip you. Watch for respiratory infection in cool damp air, obesity from too much fruit, and stress if housed with unfamiliar individuals.
