The degu is a diurnal, highly social rodent from the Chilean scrublands, related to chinchillas and guinea pigs. It has one of the richest vocal repertoires of any rodent — over a dozen distinct calls — and lives in colonies, so degus must be kept in same-sex groups of two or more; a solitary degu declines fast. Adults weigh 170–300 g and live 6–8 years. They are active, intelligent and need a large multi-level wire cage (avoid plastic — it gets eaten) with solid running wheel, digging substrate, wooden platforms and constant gnaw material. Like chinchillas they take dry baths, not water baths, a few times a week. Being awake in the day makes them far more interactive than most rodents. The defining rule: degus are extremely diabetes-prone and cannot process sugar — no fruit, no sugary treats, no molasses-bound commercial mixes. Feed a base of unlimited grass hay plus a chinchilla or degu pellet and safe leafy greens. Their teeth are naturally orange (a sign of health) and grow for life, so dental disease and diabetes-linked cataracts top the health watch-list; pale teeth or cloudy eyes warrant a vet.
