The Dumbo rat is not a separate species but a popular coat-and-conformation variety of the domestic fancy rat, named for the low, wide ears reminiscent of the Disney elephant. Like all fancy rats they descend from the brown rat, weigh 0.25-0.5 kg depending on sex, and live two to three years. Fanciers often report Dumbos as especially docile and sweet-natured, though temperament is largely down to individual handling. Care mirrors that of any fancy rat: keep them in same-sex pairs or groups, never alone, in a spacious multi-level cage furnished with hammocks, tunnels, and climbing enrichment. Offer daily supervised free-roam time and lots of interaction. Feed a complete rat nugget diet with fresh produce and occasional protein, avoiding sugary or fatty treats. Use paper-based, dust-free bedding to protect their sensitive lungs, and schedule vet checks since rats are unfortunately prone to mammary tumours and respiratory infection as they age.
