The African soft-furred rat (Praomys, formerly Mastomys) is a small rodent native to sub-Saharan Africa, named for its notably plush coat. Adults weigh 50-120 grams and can live two to four years. Though sometimes bred as feeder animals, they also make engaging pets for keepers who enjoy an active, less hands-on rodent, as they are quicker and more skittish than fancy rats. Highly social, they should be kept in same-sex groups within a secure glass tank or narrow-barred cage, since they are small enough to squeeze through standard rat-cage bars. Furnish with deep bedding, tunnels, a wheel, and climbing branches. Feed a rodent block or rat-and-mouse mix supplemented with vegetables and occasional insects or protein. Handle frequently and gently from youth to reduce nervousness, and keep the enclosure escape-proof, as their speed and small size make loose animals hard to recover.
