Spiny mice of the genus Acomys come from the rocky deserts and savannas of Africa and the Middle East. Larger and longer-lived than house mice, they reach 9-12 cm plus tail, weigh 30-90 grams, and can live three to five years. Their remarkable regenerative skin and social nature make them a fascinating, increasingly popular exotic rodent. Spiny mice are colony animals and must be kept in groups; single-sex groups avoid rampant breeding. House them in a secure, well-ventilated tank with deep sandy substrate, rocks, branches, and hides that mimic their arid habitat, plus a sand bath. Their skin is famously fragile, so never grab them by the tail or scruff roughly. Feed a varied diet of seeds, grains, and dry insects with modest vegetables; they need more animal protein than typical mice. Provide plenty of climbing structure to satisfy their agile, exploratory temperament.
