The fancy mouse is the selectively bred form of the common house mouse (Mus musculus), kept and exhibited for over a century in a huge array of colours, markings, and coat types. Adults measure 7-10 cm plus tail, weigh only 20-40 grams, and live one to two years. They are quick and delicate rather than cuddly, best appreciated for their lively antics. Females are highly social and should live in small same-sex groups, while males usually must be housed alone because they fight and mark heavily. Provide a secure glass tank or fine-barred cage with deep bedding for burrowing, tunnels, a wheel, and climbing enrichment. Feed a quality mouse or rodent mix with grains and seeds, plus small amounts of vegetables and occasional protein. Because mice have keen noses and sensitive airways, spot-clean often, do a full clean weekly, and avoid dusty or aromatic beddings like cedar and pine.
