The fancy rat is the domesticated brown rat, bred for temperament for over a century, and by most measures the most intelligent and affectionate small pet available — they learn their names, come when called, solve puzzles and "laugh" (ultrasonic chirps) when tickled. They are intensely social and must be kept in same-sex groups of two or more; a lone rat is a depressed rat. Adults weigh 250–500 g and live just 2–3 years, the breed's one heartbreak. Rats climb, so height matters: a tall multi-level wire cage with deep-litter base, hammocks, ropes, digging boxes and daily out-of-cage "free range" time under supervision. They bond hard to their humans and thrive on interaction — an hour a day is not too much. Feed a balanced lab-block or rat-specific mix as the base, plus small amounts of fresh vegetables, occasional protein and rare treats; avoid high-fat, high-sugar excess. The two great health risks are respiratory disease (mycoplasma — sneezing, red 'porphyrin' staining and labored breathing all warrant a vet) and mammary or pituitary tumours, especially in unspayed females. Spaying dramatically cuts tumour risk and is worth discussing.
