Despite the name, the Dutch rabbit was standardized in England in the 1830s from Brabant rabbits imported from the Netherlands; its unmistakable white blaze, collar and saddle pattern has made it one of the world's most recognizable breeds. Adults weigh 1.8–2.5 kg and live 6–9 years. The Dutch temperament is the breed's real treasure: steady, tolerant and quick to litter-train, which is why it has served generations as the classic family and 4-H rabbit. It still needs what every rabbit needs — several square meters of pen or free-roam, hides, tunnels, and daily interaction; a bored Dutch is an escape artist. Feed unlimited grass hay, daily varied greens and a small pellet ration; treats go to training — Dutch rabbits learn their names and simple commands with clicker work. Health is robust by rabbit standards: mind the universal rabbit risks (dental overgrowth, GI stasis, weight gain after neutering) and this breed will spend nearly a decade at your feet.
