The Dutch rabbit is among the oldest domestic breeds, popularized in England in the nineteenth century and instantly identifiable by its symmetrical two-tone markings. A compact breed weighing 1.5-2.5 kg, it is notably hardy and can live eight to twelve years with good care. Dutch rabbits are celebrated for their calm, friendly, and intelligent nature, making them excellent companions and easy to litter-train. Keep Dutch rabbits in neutered bonded pairs with a large pen or free-roam space and daily exercise. Their short, glossy coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing, increasing during moults. Provide the core rabbit diet of unlimited grass hay, daily fresh leafy greens, and a small measured pellet ration, keeping sugary and starchy treats to a minimum to protect teeth and digestion. Supply constant hay and safe chew items to wear down ever-growing teeth, and monitor droppings and appetite, as any change can signal the gut problems rabbits are prone to.
