The false water cobra hails from the wetlands and river margins of central South America, including the Pantanal, where it hunts fish, frogs, and rodents. It is a substantial snake, often 1.5 to 2 meters and occasionally larger, weighing up to 3 kilograms and living 12 to 20 years. It is rear-fanged and mildly venomous; bites can cause localized swelling, so this is a species for keepers with some experience. House this active snake in a large, very secure enclosure of at least 190 liters with a big water container for soaking. Maintain a warm side around 29-31C, a cool end in the low 20s, and humidity of 50-70%. Feed frozen-thawed rodents and occasional fish every seven to ten days. Alert and food-driven, false water cobras benefit from tong feeding and calm, confident handling; many become surprisingly interactive and tolerant.
