Garter snakes are diurnal and active, so give them a horizontally spacious 40–75 L terrarium with a warm side of 27–29°C, a cool end near 22°C, climbing décor and a large water bowl since many enjoy soaking. A low-output UVB tube benefits this day-active species even though it is not strictly essential. Feed a varied diet: earthworms are the staple, supplemented with fish fillet (thiamine-safe species) and occasional pinky mice. Feed juveniles every 4–5 days and adults every 5–7 days, keeping portions small because these slim snakes gain fat quickly. Unlike most pet snakes, some garters can be cohoused, but only with equal-sized animals and always separated at feeding time to prevent grab accidents. Handling is easy but they are quick and may musk when startled, which is harmless and washes off. Support them loosely and let them flow between your hands. Guard against respiratory infections from cool damp air, scale rot from filthy water, and vitamin deficiencies from a fish-only diet.
