House a milk snake in a secure 75–115 L terrarium with a tight lid — they are famous escape artists that test every seam. Provide a warm side of 28–30°C and a cool side around 24°C, two snug hides so the snake can thermoregulate without feeling exposed, aspen or cypress substrate for burrowing, and a water bowl big enough to soak in. No special UVB is required for this nocturnal species. Feed appropriately sized rodents — one prey item about as wide as the thickest part of the body — every 7–10 days for youngsters and every 10–14 days for adults. Milk snakes have a strong feeding response, so use tongs and let the snake strike the food rather than your fingers. Handle a few times a week once the animal has settled and skipped a meal-day, supporting the whole body and never restraining the head. Watch for retained shed on the tail tip and around the eyes, wheezing or bubbling that signals a respiratory infection, and scale rot from substrate kept too wet. A dry, warm, clean enclosure prevents almost every common problem.
