Gopher snakes are active foragers that appreciate a spacious 75–115 L terrarium with a warm side of 28–30°C, a cool end near 23°C, aspen substrate for burrowing and a secure lid. A hide at each temperature zone lets them thermoregulate while feeling safe. UVB is optional for this hardy, adaptable species. Feed appropriately sized rodents every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. They are strong feeders with good aim, so tong-feed and keep the meal modest; gopher snakes stay lean and healthy on a rodent diet without supplements. Hatchlings put on a dramatic hiss-and-tail-buzz bluff, but this fades quickly with gentle, regular handling and most adults become calm and confident. Support the whole body and let them move; they are curious and enjoy exploring. Guard against respiratory infection in cool damp cages, scale rot from wet substrate, and retained shed by offering a rough surface and a brief humidity boost at shed time.
