Gopher snakes and their close relatives the bullsnakes range widely across western and central North America, inhabiting deserts, grasslands, and farmland where they help control rodents. They are robust snakes, typically 1.2 to 1.8 meters and weighing up to 2.5 kilograms, with lifespans of 12 to 20 years. Their rattlesnake mimicry is pure theater; they are non-venomous and generally even-tempered. Provide a secure enclosure of at least 115 liters for adults, with a warm side around 29-31C and a cool retreat in the low 20s. Desert-adapted, they need only modest humidity of 30-50% and a water dish. Offer frozen-thawed rodents every seven to fourteen days, taking care not to overfeed this food-motivated species. Young snakes may hiss and strike defensively but tame quickly, becoming calm and reliable with routine handling.
