Rat snakes are agile climbers, so pair a 75–115 L footprint with tall branches and secure ledges, plus a very tight lid — they are strong and curious about every gap. Keep a warm side of 28–30°C, a cool end near 23°C, aspen substrate and a sturdy water bowl. No UVB is required for these largely crepuscular hunters. Feed rodents sized to the body's girth every 7–10 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. Rat snakes have a robust feeding response and excellent eyesight for warm targets, so tong-feed and keep hands clear until the meal is swallowed. Young rat snakes can be jumpy and may musk, but with calm, frequent handling most become confident and pleasant to hold; support the whole body and let them move through your hands. Watch for retained shed, respiratory infection in cool damp air, and scale rot on wet substrate — a warm, dry, well-ventilated cage prevents nearly all of it.
