Rat snakes span a large group across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, with popular pets including the black, yellow, and Everglades rat snakes of eastern North America. They are among the larger colubrids, commonly reaching 1.2 to 1.8 meters and up to 2 kilograms, and can live 15 to 25 years. Excellent climbers, they appreciate vertical space and are naturally curious, if sometimes defensive when young. House an adult in a spacious, secure enclosure of at least 115-190 liters with sturdy climbing branches and a tight lid. Maintain a warm side around 28-30C and a cool end in the low 20s, with humidity near 50-60%. Feed appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents every seven to fourteen days. Hatchlings can be nippy and musky but generally calm with regular handling, growing into tolerant, hardy adults.
