Western hognose snakes thrive in a dry 40–75 L terrarium with a deep, diggable substrate like aspen or a sand-soil mix, because burrowing is their favourite pastime. Offer a warm side of 29–32°C, a cool end near 24°C, a couple of hides and a modest water bowl. Keep it arid — dampness is their enemy. Feed appropriately sized mice every 5–7 days for hatchlings and 7–10 days for adults. Some individuals prefer amphibian-scented prey at first; rubbing a pinky with a toad-scent or tuna water usually converts stubborn feeders. They are a rear-fanged species with very mild saliva, harmless to healthy people but a reason to feed with tongs. These snakes tolerate handling well and rarely bite, though a hungry one may 'test-taste' a warm hand. Support the body loosely and enjoy the theatrical death-feigning display without stressing them repeatedly. Watch for obesity from too-frequent meals, retained shed in dry-but-not-humid conditions, and respiratory sniffles if kept too cool.
