Milk snakes are a wide-ranging kingsnake subspecies complex found from Canada through Central and South America, occupying woodlands, prairies, and rocky outcrops. Most pet subspecies reach 0.6 to 1.2 meters and stay under a kilogram, with lifespans of 15 to 20 years. Their alert, somewhat nervous disposition mellows with consistent gentle handling. Keep a milk snake in a secure 75-liter vivarium with a tight lid, as they are strong and slender enough to exploit any gap. Maintain a warm end near 28-29C and a cooler zone in the low 20s, with humidity around 40-60% depending on subspecies. Provide multiple snug hides, since they feel exposed without cover. Feed frozen-thawed mice every seven to ten days. Handle calmly and support the body fully; nervous individuals may musk or flee before settling.
