Garter snakes range across nearly all of North America, thriving near water in meadows, gardens, and forest edges where they hunt worms, fish, and amphibians. They are small, usually 0.5 to 0.7 meters and very lightweight, with a shorter lifespan of around 6 to 10 years. Uniquely among pet snakes, many species tolerate group housing, and their daytime activity makes them fun to watch. Provide a secure 40-75 liter enclosure with a shallow water dish, a warm basking zone around 28-30C, and a cool end in the low 20s. Humidity of 40-60% suits them. Feed a varied diet of earthworms, fish fillets low in thiaminase, and rodents to prevent nutritional deficiency; feed more often than larger snakes, roughly every four to five days. They are fast and may musk when startled but settle with gentle, frequent handling.
