The panther chameleon is endemic to the humid lowland forests of northern and eastern Madagascar, with color forms named for their home regions such as Ambilobe and Nosy Be. Males reach 40-52 cm and females about half that, with a typical lifespan of 5-7 years. Their extraordinary, mood- and locale-driven coloration makes them prized, but they are delicate, solitary, and easily stressed. Keep a single chameleon in a tall, airy screen enclosure of at least 60x60x120 cm packed with live plants and branches to provide shade, gradients, and security. Provide a basking spot of 28-32 C, robust UVB, and frequent misting or a dripper to meet their high hydration needs, since they will not drink from a bowl. Maintain 60-80% humidity with strong ventilation. Feed a variety of gut-loaded, calcium-dusted insects. Handle only when necessary, such as for cage maintenance or health checks.
