Pygmy or leaf chameleons of the genus Rieppeleon and Rhampholeon come from the leaf litter of East African forests, especially Tanzania. They measure just 5-8 cm and live only about 3-5 years, among the shortest-lived chameleons. Rather than climbing high, they inhabit low shrubs and the forest floor, relying on cryptic leaf-mimicry and a rocking gait to stay hidden. Unlike arboreal chameleons they suit a smaller, planted 30x30x45 cm terrarium and can sometimes be kept in small groups if space allows. Keep cooler, stable temperatures of 22-26 C with only low-level UVB, and maintain high humidity of 70-90% with a deep leaf-litter floor, live plants, and daily misting. Good ventilation prevents respiratory issues. Feed small gut-loaded insects such as fruit flies, micro-crickets, and springtails, lightly dusted with calcium. Handle rarely, as they are delicate and easily stressed.
