📖 Care guide

The African sideneck, or West African mud turtle, comes from the freshwater lakes, rivers, and marshes of central and western Africa. A medium species reaching 18-30 cm, it is prized for its outgoing, interactive personality and long life of 25-50 years, so plan for a decades-long companion. House an adult in a warm aquatic tank of at least 300 liters with strong filtration and a basking platform at 31-33°C under UVB lighting. Being a tropical species, it prefers warmer water than temperate turtles, ideally 24-28°C, which may require an aquarium heater. Sidenecks are enthusiastic swimmers and eager eaters that come to recognize their keepers. Feed an omnivorous diet of quality pellets, insects, worms, snails, fish, and leafy greens, keeping protein moderate in adults to avoid obesity and rapid shell growth.
