Eastern box turtles are terrestrial and thrive in a large, humid outdoor pen in mild climates or a spacious indoor enclosure with deep, moisture-holding substrate for burrowing. Provide a basking spot of 29–31°C, a cool retreat, UVB lighting, ambient humidity of 60–80%, plus a shallow water pan big enough to soak in. They are not aquatic and can drown in deep water. The diet is a true omnivore mix: earthworms, snails, insects, dark leafy greens, vegetables and some fruit, varied widely to keep them interested. Juveniles skew more carnivorous and eat daily; adults eat every other day with plenty of plant matter. Box turtles are calm and can become quite personable, recognising keepers and feeding routines, though they dislike being flipped or handled roughly; keep interaction low-key and let them walk. They are deeply tied to their home range and stress badly if constantly relocated. Watch for respiratory infection in cold damp conditions, metabolic bone disease without UVB or calcium, shell rot from filth, and kidney problems from chronic dehydration — regular soaks help.
